Re-launched design classic: To mark the 200th anniversary of traditional manufacturer Thonet, the Studio Besau Marguerre 2019 has given Michael Thonet's No 14 coffee house chair classic of 1859 a new livery, creating the 214 Two-Tone chair. The anniversary edition of the 214 is available in classic beech wood and wicker seats, albeit highlight trough the different stains: the connecting elements of the Thonet chair are a few shades pickled lighter than the seat ring and chair legs, making Eva Marguerre and Marcel Besau the chair classic bring its classic silhouette into a contemporary context. The 214 re-imagend by Studio Besau Marguerre is strictly limited!

Design Story

Eva Marguerre and Marcel Besau a.k.a. Studio Besau Marguerre, with their interpretations of the classic Thonet 214 chair

Classic of furniture history: The Thonet 214

Hardly any chair in the history of furniture design has been sold successfully in its original form for so long as the Thonet 214. The so-called coffee house chair shaped an entire epoch and made the Austrian furniture manufacturer Thonet famous worldwide. The founder of the company, Michael Thonet, is the designer of the timeless classic, whose creation was made possible only by the perfected technique of bending solid wood. Thonet experimented at that time until he could change the shape of wood by means of hot steam so that the back and legs of the chair could be bent. To this day, the process gives Thonet 214 its characteristic appearance and the name bentwood chair. The Thonet bentwood chair soon became one of the most popular seating objects in the Viennese coffee houses of the early 20th century: thanks in large part to the reduced number of components and their construction system, it was possible to ship 36 disassembled chairs in a transport box of only 1 square meter. The assembly took place on site, which was a novelty at that time and enabled the distribution of the designer chair on almost every continent in the world. Thus, the Thonet 214 is still considered a pioneer of industrial design. The classic version with wicker seat is now supplemented with another - the Thonet 214 M featuring a seat made of curved, smooth plywood. With its image as the first bentwood chair in furniture history, the Thonet chair 214 radiates the flair of a true traditionalist, yet at the same time it still fits elegantly into any room concepts.

Contemporary interpretation of a classic: Thonet 214 re-imagined

On the occasion of their 200th anniversary, Thonet launch a series of special editions of its design icons, including the design classic Thonet 214. The design by Michael Thonet from 1859 shines in 2019 and captivates with four colourful re-editions of the 214 chair, available exclusively in the anniversary year 2019 and re-worked by Studio Besau Marguerre. With four two-tone colour combinations, Marcel Besau and Eva Marguerre bring the classic bentwood chair into a contemporary context. While the Thonet seat is typically made of wickerwork, the Thonet chair's elements are a few shades lighter in colour than the seat and chair legs, creating a particularly enchanting play of colours that brings the classic silhouette of the chair into a contemporary context, and a new interpretation of classic colours which gives the 214 Two-Tone a pleasingly contemporary look. And a work very much in sense of the famous quote from Charles & Ray Eames, "the details are not the details, they make the product". Or as designers Marguerre and Besau say, "The iconic nature of the chair is emphasized"
