The designer Marcel Breuer was behind a collection of furniture objects made from bent tubular steel for the German manufacturer Thonet; and thus objects which combine industrial materials with style. Although particularly known in context of the cantilever chair, Marcel Breuer was also responsible for the B 9 tables, the further development of which, the so-called B 9d/1, provides the same quality albeit with additional storage space.

Design Story

The B 9d/1 is the largest table in the B 9 series created by the designer Marcel Breuer for the producer Thonet. Offering extra storage space the Thonet B 9d/1 fits perfectly with all other pieces of chrome plated tubular steel furniture from the Thonet collection, including numerous other pieces created by Breuer during his time at Bauhaus Dessau. On account of his Hungarian Jewish roots Marcel Breuer fled from the advancing Nazis, initially to the UK and subsequently to the USA, where he once again cooperated closely with Walter Gropius. Post-war Marcel Breuer enjoyed a high global reputation as an interior decorator and designer, while as an architect he realized numerous projects in both Europe and the USA. His steel tube furniture designs remain however one of his defining achievements, advancing as they did domestic interiors and as does the Breuer B 9d/1 providing as it does an elegant solution as a coffee or telephone table, but also in any living room, dining room or hallway.
