The Superellipse Table is also known as Piet Hein table or super-elliptical table. The concept of the superellipse goes back to the Danish mathematician and philosopher Piet Hein and as with the mathematical model the table top is formed such that every sitter has an advantageous table form between an ellipse and rectangle. Piet Hein designed his eponymous table in 1968 together with the designers Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen - then as now Fritz Hansen produces the high quality designer table in a range of sizes and table tops.

Design Story

Available in a range of sizes the Piet Hein table - or super-elliptical table - belongs alongside a number of square, rectangular and super-circular tables to a collection designed by Piet Hein, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen in the late 1960s for Fritz Hansen. The unique, and apparently unspectacular, shape of the Piet Hein table top hides some extremely advantageous characteristics: not only is it exceptionally harmonious in all sizes, but the Fritz Hansen table is particularly "democratic" whereby wherever you sit you have the same shape table edge in front of you, thus meaning that no one has an awkward sitting position. This is realised by the form which lies between circular or elliptical and rectangular, and thus evokes the spirit of the Danish scientist and inventor Piet Hein, who developed the concept of the superellipse as a solution to transport problems. the Danish designers Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen were involved in the development of the Piet Hein table as well as all other tables in the family. The table top is crafted from a 22 mm thick chipwood board, which is coated with either beech or walnut veneer, different coloured laminate or black linoleum.
