The Artek Stool 60 was designed in 1933 by Alvar Aalto. The Finnish architect is famous for the design of many buildings, works which embody a pioneering combination of organic spaces, shapes and materials. The Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek was founded by Aalto and some associates in 1935 and featured the stool in its founding range from where it blossomed in the 1940s into an international bestseller. Alvar Aalto took advantage of the large amounts of birch in Finland and chose this type of wood for the Stool 60, rather than using metal or another material. The Artek Stool 60 consists of three curved legs and a round seat and on account of its functional simplicity has become a much loved design classic. The secret of this design lies in the curvature of the legs, a feature which became a significant component of all furniture by Alvar Aalto. As Stool E60 the Scandinavian furniture classic is also available as a four-legged version.
