With his victory in a 1949 Swedish book shelf competition Nisse Strinning popularised his reduced String design - and in the same year a company was founded with the same name which has since sold the shelf system thousandfold. Since 2005 a wall version of the classic has been available: the String Pocket is the smaller, but just as adaptable version, of its practical big brother.

Design Story

At the age of 32 years Nisse Strinning designed, in collaboration with his wife, the bookshelf String for a competition organised by a Swedish publishing house. And promptly won it. In the same year a production and distribution company was founded, and named after the shelf: "String". The rest is design history. The original String shelf is made of filigree wire conductors as side ladders which are attached directly to the wall and can subsequently be combined with shelves in a wide range of colours. In 1953 String released the first free-standing version of the popular bookcase; albeit a version that was not to Nisse Strinning's liking: a fact which didn't stop the objects triumphal march through the world. In addition to establishing itself in private flats and houses, String is also a popular feature in commercial buildings and public institutions, including, for example, the UN headquarters in New York. The winner of numerous international design awards, the String system has been extended over the years into a flexible wall shelf solution with a whole system of accessories components. In 2005 the String Pocket was launched; in design and concept exactly the same as the String, the String Pocket is a smaller version of the wall shelf which through its functionality and adaptability is universally usable. Whether in the kitchen as a spice rack, in the bathroom as a shelf for towels, tubes and creams or in the nursery as accommodation for a loved toy, available in a wide range of colours, the String Pocket is the wonderful all-rounder among wall shelves.
