Arne Jacobsen designed the Swan armchair in 1958, as he did the Egg Chair for the lobby and lounge areas of the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The commission to design the hotel building included developing all aspects of the exterior and interior design and gave the Danish architect and designer a unique opportunity to put into practice his integrative approach to his work. The result is a hotel as a total work of art, with which Jacobsen has set a design monument from the building through the interior and fabrics to the cutlery. The Fritz Hansen Swan chair refers to Jacobsen's attachment to nature, and was, and according to the legend was inspired by the elegant waterfowl that are so omnipresent in Copenhagen, and with them the Swan armchair shares a unified, graceful momentum: the one-piece organic, cold foam-padded plastic seat shell, which is covered in leather or fabric and mounted on a rotating aluminium star base. The prototypes of the Swan Chair and the Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair were created in his garage in Klampenborg north of Copenhagen and have been produced since the 1950s by Fritz Hansen.
For the 60th anniversary of the Egg Chair, Fritz Hansen have created an extravagant limited edition of the design classic. The aluminium frame has been finished with a 23-carat gold plating, while the seat shell features covers made of high-quality pure leather. Due to its natural state, the exquisite aniline leather can feature remnants of insect bites or have visible neck folds, which under influence of sunlight will darken with time. The gold-plated base of the Egg Chair will also gradually gain a charming patina, thereby making the Arne Jacobsen design classic, which is only available in limited quantities, a rare and exquisite piece.
