Design Story

Mr. Impossible producer Kartell is known for their plastic furniture; plastic furniture which are both high quality and at the same time somewhat eccentric. The best example is Mr. Impossible, which is made completely of polycarbonate and which presents a most futuristic appearance. Starting with the chair legs, Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quitllet made them transparent and hollow and thus allow the seat to float. The highlight of the Kartell chair however is the seat shell featuring as it does two laser-welded half shells joined together by an indestructible advanced technology. The color of the upper shell can be selected from various nuances and combined with the transparent bottom shell to produce a refined, aesthetic effect. Thanks to its material Mr. Impossible from Kartell is also shockproof and weather resistant, which thus makes it ideal both as a dining chair as well as comfortable seating for the garden.

Nothing is Impossible: Phillipe Starck wins Good Design Award 2008

...But most heartening was the prize for a design that smow knew was good: Because smow stock it - Mr. Impossible from Phillipe Starck for Kartell... Mr. Impossible is in many ways a marriage of Starcks earlier work with Kartell, for example his Victoria Ghost chair and Charles Ghost stool, and the plastic side chair tradition of Ray and Charles Eames - and hence its affectionate nickname in the (smow)warehouse: "Eames Ghost"...
