Design Museum Holon

The end of January sees the inauguration of the new Design Museum in Holon, Israel. We were planning heading on over, until we read that the “Design Museum Holon’s permanent collection … will be unveiled in five to seven years”

So we’ll probably wait until the collection is in before booking our flights.

But given that the permanent collection is still half a decade away, and that no temporary or travelling exhibitions have been announced…. why the official inauguration?

The answer is also the real star of the Design Museum: the Design Museum itself.

Created by Ron Arad, arguably Israels greatest designer, the building is a genuine monolith formed from five bands of terracotta-coloured weathered steel.

If we were real design bloggers we’d probably compare it to a metallic, futuristic, whale stranded on the infertile sands of central Israel.

Or one very large Tom Vac chair for Vitra.

Or possibly a Bookworm for Kartell.

But reality being what it is we wont.

Ron Arad effectively started his commercial architecture career with his redesign of the Tel Aviv Opera foyer, and since then has worked on many important projects in his homeland. And we’re looking forward to checking out his latest.

But as we say, once there are some object inside to contrast to the outside.
