London-based design studio Doshi Levien was founded in 2000 by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien. The two met in 1995 at the Royal College of Art in London and have since combined different cultural backgrounds as complementary strengths: Doshi was born in Mumbai, grew up in New Delhi, and studied at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. She draws inspiration from modern architecture and Indian craftsmanship. Levien, originally from Scotland, is a trained cabinetmaker and brings industrial precision and a deep understanding of materials.
The studio stands for design as a cultural exchange, characterised by diversity, attention to detail, and a confident handling of material, colour and form. Doshi Levien is internationally renowned for its work in ceramics, furniture, fashion, textile and lighting design, as well as for his collaborations with leading manufacturers such as Hay, Moroso, Kvadrat, and B&B Italia. In addition, Doshi Levien have worked on projects and exhibitions for institutions and museums such as the Galerie Kreo in Paris, the French National Museum of Ceramics Sèvres, and the Grand Hornu in Belgium.
Doshi Levien has received numerous awards for their work, including the 2008 "Future Legends of Design" Award from the Cooper Hewitt National Museum of Design in New York and, in 2023, her inclusion in the King's New Year Honours List, which recognises outstanding contributions to public life in the United Kingdom.
For Hay, Doshi Levien designed, among other objects, the Quilton Sofa. Doshi and Levien describe their sofa as a "quilted landscape sofa system" – a spacious, quilted sofa landscape that serves as a central platform for living, working, relaxing, and socialising.
