The history of the Series 7 bar stool effectively begins with Arne Jacobsen's Ant chair. In 1952 the three-legged dining chair was released by the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen: though not universally - thus, and after much discussion, Arne Jacobsen developed the unconventional three-legged stool into a four-legged version: the Series 7. With to date more than 5 million sold the four-legged Series 7 Chair is not only a genuine classic of modern furniture history but is also the best-selling Fritz Hansen object. The seat shell made of moulded wood veneer is the same as with all Series 7 chairs, however, here combined with a higher base to allow for a bar or kitchen stool version. The familiar curved Series 7 seat shell sits atop a steel tube base, a combination which gives the object an elegant, sleek optic and makes it perfect for use in any bar, shop or kitchen environment. At its launch in the 1950s the innovative aspect of Arne Jacobsen's Series 7 was not only the shape of the seat, but also their production. Although the method of lamination was already known, it was Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen who perfected it for mass production. Under the effects of steam the glued layers of wood are brought into the typical three-dimensional shape. Thus, it is possible to manufacture the curved seat surface and the backrest in one piece, a fact which is ultimately responsible for the distinctive shape of the designer chairs.
