Design Story

The Design

Lavishly studded with transparent or golden balls the Caboche Pendant light by Patricia Urquiola & Eliana Gerotto is reminiscent of a precious pearl bracelet. Since its inception in 2005 it has become one of the best sellers of the manufacturer Foscarini and has become an icon among contemporary design lamps. The peculiarity, and originality, of the Caboche Sospensione arises from the annularly arranged balls of transparent acrylic glass which not only result in the object's opulent look, but also directs the light of Foscarini lamp evenly in all directions. As if broken by countless crystals, the light radiates through the space and is reflected from the ceiling. Despite its striking design the Foscarini Caboche offers, thanks its colour neutrality, has the grace to set a subtly opulent accent in any private or public spaces.

Caboche Sospensione piccola in transparent and golden yellow

Production

The Italian lighting manufacturer Foscarini produces the Caboche Sospensione in three sizes - piccola, media and grande - and available in either a transparent or golden yellow finish. The balls are made of polymethyl methacrylate, and in the media and grande version are mounted on a crown made of polycarbonate sheets attached to a chrome plated metal frame. The inner shade (with the piccola, the only sahade) is made of etched mouth blown glass, the lower shade from opaque satin opal glass. The media and grande versions come equipped with three stainless steel suspension cables, the Foscarini Caboche piccola with one. All electric cables are transparent. The ceiling rose with bracket is made of galvanized metal covered with ABS plastic. The production of all Foscarini lamps is carried out according to the criteria of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality and environmental management certification.

Patricia Urquiola and Eliana Gerotto developed the Caboche lamp together.

Manufacturer

Established in 1981 on the Venetian island of Murano Foscarini embodies the concept of innovation. Accordingly, only those designs are realised which represent an innovation in some way - be it formal, technical or material. The Foscarini "research workshop" is now home to a diverse portfolio of contemporary designs including a number of iconic objects such as the floor lamp Havana by Jozeph Forakis - a work represented in the collections of MoMA and the Centre Pompidou - and new, contemporary, designs such as the award-winning light aplomb by Lucidi & Pevere. The longevity of these and many other designs correspond to Foscarini's understanding of sustainability as well as the observance of environmental guidelines in the manufacturing process: As one of the first Italian lamp manufacturers Foscarini achieved in 2012 UNI EN ISO 14001 certification.
