The Vitra DCM by Ray and Charles Eames is part of the so-called Plywood Group - a series of chairs in which the Eames's, combined a characteristic seat and backrest crafted from moulded plywood, at that time a totally innovative material for furniture production, with a series of different bases. The DCM has a simple base made of steel tube: a material mix which provides for an interesting, and very pleasing, contrast.

What does DCM mean?

DCM means Dining Chair Metal.

Design Story

The DCM multi-purpose chair was designed by the famous designer couple Charles and Ray Eames and is now produced by the Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra. Among the production models developed by the Eames's was the concept of combining a seat shell with a range of different bases, and thus to offer versions for different situations. Such is also the case with the chairs of the Plywood Group - a groups which resulted from years of experimentation with forming laminated plywood into stable, robust and comfortable seat and backrests. In the case of the Vitra DCM they combined the moulded plywood seat and backrest with a simple steel tube base, and which is slightly higher than that of his nearest relative, the LCM lounge chair. However just as with the LCM the Vitra DCM impresses with its striking contrast of moulded plywood and chrome plated metal, and the special lightness that consequently arises.

...Our initial reaction was that it was a DCM by Charles and Ray Eames... Except the DCM is of course a four legged chair...
