Stefan Scholten
Stefan Scholten is one of the most influential voices in contemporary Dutch design. After graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven in 1995, Scholten founded his own studio in Amsterdam in 2019 from where he develops internationally acclaimed projects for brands such as Hay, Moroso, Maharam, Forbo or Cappellini.
Scholten's work is characterised by a reduced, clear style that gains depth through the subtle, often surprising use of colour. His designs combine functionality with expressiveness – always with the goal of creating long-lasting products with a special sensual quality.
The so-called studio method plays a central role in Stefan Scholten's design process: The designer essentially thinks with his hands. Instead of conceptualising his designs down to the last detail on the computer from the outset, he approaches his ideas directly in an open work process: he sketches, draws, experiments with colours, shapes, and materials. This results in furniture and objects that appear intuitive yet are carefully thought out, such as the Facet Cabinet from Hay.
