Studio Œ: Exploring everyday objects with humour and poetry

Designers Lisa Ertel and Anne-Sophie Oberkrome met whilst studying product design at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design and founded Studio Πin Berlin in 2021. There, the pair create furniture and object designs, as well as spatial interventions. Their work encompasses self-initiated projects as well as interdisciplinary collaborations and commissioned work for international brands.

At the heart of Studio Œ’s design philosophy lie the unique properties of materials and the phenomena of everyday life. Studio Œ combines these impressions with an exploratory approach, developing works that address their spatial and social contexts with a great deal of humour. Their multi-layered, analytical and sensitive design approach is also evident in their Bascule lounge chair for Vitra : Studio Œ developed the cover for the Bascule Lounge Chair using techniques from the world of fashion. It drapes around the chair like a tailor-made jacket with soft, expressive folds. So rather than upholstering the chair in the conventional way, Studio Œ have, in a sense, dressed it, thereby lending it a special presence as an object.

Furthermore, Ertel and Oberkrome work in collaborative groups such as FAN, Farm and Many-to-Many, through which they realise, amongst other things, their own projects and exhibitions. Both are also active in teaching, including at the HfbK Hamburg and as visiting professors at the HBK Saar and the HfG Karlsruhe.
