The design of the Vitra Home Desk originates from 1958 and the pencil of George Nelson, and with its filigree nature one understands that the table is not necessarily from this century. With its reduced form and elaborately crafted, slender, legs the desk unquestionably belongs to the 1950s, yet as a painstakingly studied piece of design is perfect in any contemporary residential space. Today the George Nelson table is produced by the Swiss manufacturer Vitra and the colourful plastic partitions of the tray on the table could just as easily be contemporary styling touches...or 1950s styling touches.

Design Story

The Home Desk by George Nelson was originally conceived as a ladies' desk, today the minimalist desk is understood in much more universal terms - and with its slender, delicate curved legs as a classic of 1950s design. Today the Vitra Secretary is perfect as a contemporary space-saving home office desk. The wooden frame crafted from high quality walnut veneer contrasts perfectly with the modern white laminate desk top, while the overall effect of the Nelson desk is spiced up by the compartments and their brightly coloured plastic partition walls, practical and eye catching. With the Vitra Home Desk George Nelson once again proves why he was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. After studying architecture at Yale University, the young artist was awarded a scholarship to Rome where he developed close contact with leading protagonists of European modernism. His career then took of when he was appointed Design Director at Herman Miller, in which context George Nelson is considered co-discoverer of Charles & Ray Eames, whose designs are also now produced by Vitra. Since his death in 1986 in New York, George Nelson's archive has been managed by the Vitra Design Museum.
