Arne Jacobsen's Grand Prix was first presented in 1957 at the spring exhibition of Danish designers at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Copenhagen. Then, as now, the chair was produced by Danish designer furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen. The chair received its name following its award of the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957, its more official name, 3130, retained the Arne Jacobsen chair nevertheless.

Design Story

All three of the chairs Arne Jacobsen produced together with the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen went onto to find a global fame. It started with the Ant. Released in 1952 the Ant Chair one of the first chairs formed from layers of glued plywood veneer. Initially a three legs Arne Jacobsen also later designed a version with four legs. Three years later acme the most famous and best-selling Jacobsen chair, the Series 7, a chair which also consists of a one-piece plywood shell. The trio is completed by the Grand Prix chair from 1957,a chair which that year won the Grand Prix at the Milan Furniture Fair, one of the most important furniture design awards at that time. Looking at the Grand Prix chair that hardly comes as a surprise. Its narrow waist gives the chair not only a delicate appearance, the shape also provides a nice soft seating comfort. The chair was initially produced with a wooden base, subsequently a steel tube version was added to thus connect it to the Ant and the Series 7. For many years the Arne Jacobsen Grand Prix was not offered in the wood trim, until in 2014 Fritz Hansen re-released the classic form.
