Due to the difficult circumstances on the world market regarding the procurement of raw materials and stagnating supply chains, as well as the fact that the Akari lamps are handmade in Japan by only a few specialists, waiting times of several months can unfortunately occur. Design Story

The American-Japanese artist Isamu Noguchi was inspired for his famous Akari Light Sculptures, whose collection includes the Akari 24N/25N lights, by his trip to Japanese city of Gifu, known for the production of paper umbrellas and lanterns. He wanted to give the traditional craft a modern face and, based on his first draft in 1951, designed over 100 models of Akari table lamps, floor lamps and pendant lamps, which remain popular design classics. The Swiss manufacturer Vitra, well-known for their cooperations with designers as Charles & Ray Eames, Jean Prouvé or Alexander Girard, also distributes a selection of Noguchi's, and in doing so adheres to the original manufacturing process; which in context of the Akari consists of careful handwork and the characteristic Shoji paper. "Akari" is the Japanese expression for light and brightness, but also stands for the concept of lightness. The Akari lights fulfil these properties to the full, and fit easily into any contemporary interior and provide for cosy ambient light.
