The Vitra HAL RE bar stool is part of the HAL chair family with which designer Jasper Morrison reinterpreted the shell chair for Vitra between 2010 and 2014. And a family which remains true to Morrison's understanding of good, functional design: "Special is generally less useful than normal." Available in a variety of colours and two different seat heights, the Vitra HAL barstool brings a playful elegance to every bar.

Please note:
The RE plastic consists of a granulate of recycled plastics from the German "Yellow Sack" packaging recycling system and approx. 10% fibreglass material to achieve the necessary rigidity. The familiar colours of the seat shells do not change as a result of this material change. However, with the lighter seat shell colours tiny pigments of differently coloured granules may be visible upon closer inspection. These pigments do not represent a defect, but are a feature of the new sustainable material. Below is a comparative example of the colour "ice grey" in high magnification - the new material is on the right.

Design Story

Vitra HAL Collection

Design

The Vitra HAL bar stool is part of the Vitra HAL collection developed between 2010 to 2014 and arising from Jasper Morrison's wish to rethink the classic shell chair for Vitra anew. From the kitchen or general purpose chair and on to the cantilever chair: the Vitra HAL Chairs are applicable in great many locations, private, public or commercial. The HAL bar stool comes as the ultimate expression of this bandwidth and is available as either 64.5 cm high kitchen version or 78-cm bar version. According to Jasper Morrison's maxim "Special is generally less useful than normal", the HAL bar stool is a simple but smart addition to the HAL series. The elegant shaping of the polypropylene seat and eight colour options prove that "Super Normal" does not automatically mean "Boring"!

The HAL bar stool is available in two heights, as a kitchen stool and a bar stool.

Designer

Jasper Morrison graduated from London's Royal College of Art in 1985 and is one of the most successful contemporary furniture and product designers of his generation. Or indeed any generation. His formal language defines private and public spaces of our time and his appreciation of the attribute "super normal" omnipresent in his simple and functional designs. Jasper Morrison follows the maxim that the form of an object is to be subordinate to its benefit for the user; and realises this in reduced furniture designs which are as unobtrusive as perfectly functional. In cooperation with the Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra Morrison has, in addition to the HAL chairs, realised several products and product families including the All Plastic Chair, Cork Family and NesTable. Jasper Morrison's designs are represented in renowned collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Manufacturer

The HAL bar stool, as with the rest of the HAL collection, is the result of a joint project between designer Jasper Morrison and the Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra. A collaborations that stands in a long history of collaborations between Vitra and leading contemporary furniture and product designers that began in the second half of the 20th century with the likes of George Nelson, Ray & Charles Eames, and Verner Panton and continued with contemporary creatives contemporaries including Hella Jongerius, Maarten van Severen, or Morrison. Whether preserving the design heritage or promoting design innovation, Vitra's mission is the same: good design that helps in everyday life and demonstrates how beautiful it can be. Beyond products per se Vitra also maintains the the Vitra Design Campus, home to the the Vitra Design Museum, while the company operates according to specially developed and certified quality and environmental management system.

Production

As with the other chairs in the Vitra HAL collection, the Vitra HAL Bar Stool features an organically shaped seat shell, crafted from polypropylene, dyed throughout in eight contemporary colour color variations. The four-legged base is made of chrome-plated tubular steel, with the bar version – 78 cm high – featuring a slip-resistant finish. As with the HAL Sledge or the HAL Wood, every HAL meets Vitra's commitment to environmentally friendly products: timeless design, inherently durable, is combined with the possibility of being recycled if necessary. Furthermore, the Swiss furniture manufacturer is committed to conserving energy, raw materials, and other resources. A certified quality and environmental management system has been developed specifically for this purpose..

The HAL Bar Stool RE: Sustainable Seat Shells Made from Recycled Materials

Today the seat shell of the HAL Bar Stool is manufactured in a sustainable version: the HAL RE seat shell, a version made entirely from recycled plastic sourced from German household waste and collected through the Dual System (“Yellow Bag”). The high-quality recycled material bequeaths the seat shell a special, distinctive surface thanks to fine pigment speckles.

With this material change Vitra not only reduces its primary energy consumption but also significantly lowers CO₂ emissions. The seat shell remains fully recyclable – an important step towards a circular economy and a responsible design approach.
