Design Story

The pendant lamps 45A, 55A, 75A and 120A are part of the collection of Akari Light Sculptures conceived by the Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi in 1951: a collection of over 100 different ceiling lamps, pendant lamps, floor lamps and table lamps, all of which were hand-made from shoji paper. Vitra, who today sells only a part of his designs, adheres in production to Noguchi's handiwork manufacturing process. On account of the special material, the balloon-shaped paper lamp gives off a soft, pleasant light and can thus be effortlessly added to any space. The Akari lamps 45A, 55A, 75A and 120A are spherical models and are available in various sizes. Since 1957 Vitra has been a producer of well-known designer furniture from the likes of Charles and Ray Eames or George Nelson and has developed on this basis over the years, and in cooperation with progressive designers, a successful portfolio of contemporary and classic furniture designs.

Lost Furniture Design Classics: Model 9 Table Lamp by Isamu Noguchi for Knoll Associates

...Isamu Noguchi's most popularly known work is inarguably his Akari lamps, yet before Akari there came a lamp which in many regards exists more in context of the man and his art than its more famous relations... In addition, and without any evidence beyond a gut feeling, the fact that the first Akari were offered for sale in America in 1953 may have left the much simpler Model 9 looking a little less interesting...

There is therefore something very satisfying about the fact the Noguchi Museum have chosen largely to ignore the Akari themselves and instead present a series of installations which promise to allow for a more fundamental interaction with the objects than simply as lamps...

smow Blog High 5 Special: When fashion meets design.....

...The Akari Skirt As a phenomenon fashion exists in a state of continual revival and reinvention, something perfectly demonstrated by the hooped skirt: the farthingale of the 16th and 17th centuries, becoming the 18th century pannier before evolving into the 19th century crinolines, and achieving its most contemporary guise as the Akari Skirt, an object inspired by Isamu Noguchi's 1951 light sculptures... Replacing the willow, whalebone and steel of past generations with rings of bamboo, the Akari skirt offers a lighter, more sustainable version of the genre, and thereby one more in tune with contemporary ecological considerations...
