After many experiments with moulded plywood Charles and Ray Eames developed in 1945/46 their Plywood Group, a group which also includes the LCW and the LCW Leather, chairs which today are marketed by Vitra. Designed to conform to the shape of the human body in as natural a sitting position as possible, the Vitra Eames chairs thus enable a pleasant and relaxing seating experience. With their low cut form the deep LCW chairs are not only visually reminiscent of a traditional lounge chair, but also allow for a similar seating experience. Standing on four curved feet the Vitra chair is as stable as it is relaxing, and that with or without the high-quality leather upholstery.

smow blog 2015. A pictorial review: December

...We however managed to more than fill the first half of December 2015 with Berlin based Bora Hong's cosmetic surgery of the Eames LCW, the architecture of Ferdinand Kramer in Frankfurt and a very long chat with Köln International School of Design director, and neuen Deutschen Design protagonist, Wolfgang Laubersheimer...

Bora Hong - Cosmetic Surgery Kingdom @ VOLUME Gallery Berlin

...Transferring her research into contemporary attitudes on cosmetic surgery from the animate to the inanimate world Bora Hong created a series of "Eames LCW" chairs from reassembled fragments of abandoned and forgotten "normal" chairs... The exhibition at Volume Gallery Berlin presents, in addition to videos and photos from the Cosmetic Surgery Kingdom project, the evolution of Bora Hong's considerations on beauty in design from her reassembled LCWs over original Eames LCWs "customised" by Bora Hong with a chisel - "I considered the LCW itself might be getting bored with its appearance" - and onto the latest phase of the project in which the LCWs are recreated from epoxy resin in which are trapped fragments of old, normal, chairs: these recent works reflecting current trends in cosmetic surgery where beyond the simple alterations of yore, bones are increasingly being cut, removed and reconfigured, fundamental structural changes being undertaken and appearances being made to order, designed to order if you will...
