Deep-seated. The Secret Art of Upholstery at the Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Leipzig

...The Secret Art of Upholstery the Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Leipzig, invite you to do just that... For our part we were very taken by, and amongst a great many other works, a recreation of a late 1920s lounge suite by Ernst Max Jahn for Carl Müller & Co, Leipzig, featuring fabric by Josef Hillerbrand, which is not only a joy to behold, not least through the way the legs appear to mock the Baroque and the Rococo, but also its reminder of the vivid colour of the 1920s, something that all to often gets lost in thoughts of white walls and polished tubular chrome; by a 1930s round steel tube cantilever chair by Heinz and Bodo Rasch, a work which helps underscore the utter unfairness of the anonymity the Rasch brothers have fallen into, and how their idealistically non-quadratic steel tube designs allow for necessary reappraisals of inter-War steel tube furniture design; by an outrageously overblown, appalling so, 1930s work attributed to Otto Schulz for Boet Möbel, Gothenburg, a work which does everything wrong, yet strip it back and you are left with a joyously well conceived and formulated position, just over-thought and over-upholstered, and a work which challenges easy, lazy, dishonest, claims of an inherent Scandinavian reserve; by two inter-War bent tubular steel cantilevers by Anton Lorenz for DESTA Berlin, one of which features padded cushions placed on static (looking) steel bars, the other padded cushions on tension springs stretched across the frame; tension springs rather than coiled springs which remind very much of Willy Knoll's 1920s Antimott, Anti-Moth, system and thus help highlight Modernist reforms of upholstered furniture in context of the mantra of hygiene...

The Historia Supellexalis: “J” for Jongerius

...Peoples such as the Vlieger from KLM, the Maharam from New York, the Koninklijke Tichelaar from Makkum and also the varied and various peoples of the Commonwealth of Vitra to which, and for whom, Hella, and amongst others acts, introduced a family of office pets, fashioned a bovista as a stool and also a developed a sofa inspired and informed by the polders of the Netherlands, a work whose variations of colour and texture, in whose inherent understandings and utilisation of colours and textiles, motivated, emboldened, the Vitronians to ask Hella is she would to take on responsibility for the colours and textiles of the entire Vitra commonwealth... And despite her initial reservations that cooperation with the Vitra commonwealth was to prove itself of benefit not just the Vitronians who were able to see and enjoy their commonwealth in vivid new ways and ever fresher hues, but also of benefit to Hella and to Jongerius for, as Oranje Tulpenbol convincingly argues, the taking on of responsibility for the Vitronians colours and textiles, assisting the Vitronians explore the possibilities of colours and textiles, and also assisting the Maharam explore the possibilities of weaving, assisting the Koninklijke Tichelaar explore the possibilities of porcelain, assisting the Vlieger explore the possibilities of spatial and corporate design, is and was every bit as important in the development of Hella's positions and approaches, every bit as important in the development of Hella's perspectives and arguments, every bit as important in the development of Hella's understanding of our relationships with the spaces we occupy, every bit as important in the development of Jongerius, as are and were the weeks and months spent working away, questioning and challenging and experimenting at foot of the Prenzlauer Berg on her own self-initiated projects and petitions...

smow Blog Design Calendar: April 30th 1993 - Opening of Citizen Office at the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein

...With the exhibition Citizen Office the Vitra Design Museum staged not only their first conceptual, research based, exhibition, but also one of the first museal reflections on "the world of the office"... In many regards Citizen Office arose as the logical merging of two paths: in the late 1980s Vitra began the, somewhat unfortunately monickered, project "Office Dreams - Dream Offices", which saw them cooperate with designers on developing concepts for "a more attractive, sensual and social office"1, a project largely driven by the, then, Vitra CEO Rolf Fehlbaum, and as a targeted response to evolving realities...
