Panthella lights from Louis Poulsen - iconic lighting design with an organic silhouette

The Panthella is one of Verner Panton's most famous lighting designs and has been a classic in the Danish lighting manufacturer's range for decades Louis Poulsen. With its softly curved, organic silhouette, characteristic hemispherical shade and pleasantly diffuse light, it epitomises Scandinavian design in its most iconic form. Whether as a table lamp, floor lamp or in a modern battery-powered version - the Panthella combines atmospheric lighting with a sculptural presence and blends effortlessly into a wide variety of living environments.

The original Panthella 400 table lamp from 1971 is now available in numerous sizes and Variants as well as a battery-powered version

The design history of the Panthella luminaire - a child of the 70s

When Verner Panton designed the Panthella in 1971, one central idea took centre stage: to create a luminaire in which not only the light source, but the entire construction functions as a light source. His aim was to achieve completely glare-free and soft light distribution in the room. The organic, mushroom-like shape was just as progressive at the time as the consistent use of injection-moulded acrylic, which opened up new possibilities in series production at the time.

While Panton had already experimented with plastic before, he used its diffuse properties to perfection in the Panthella: the hemispherical shade gently directs the light outwards, while at the same time reflecting a large part of it directly downwards. There it meets the characteristic trumpet-shaped base, which serves as an additional reflector and distributes the light evenly in the room.

Formally characterised by the optimism and experimentation of the space-age era, the Panthella reflects the spirit in which new materials and flowing forms revolutionised architecture. Despite its expressive silhouette, the luminaire never appears loud. It quickly established itself as a cosy antithesis to purely technical and functional lighting solutions and remains one of the most successful and enduring designs in the history of Danish design to this day.

An iconic lighting design - what makes the Panthella so special

The Panthella combines form, material and light direction to create a harmonious overall look. Versions with opal lampshades create a particularly soft glow, while glossy surfaces lend the design a sculptural presence.

Typical of Louis Poulsen is the consistent focus on lighting quality: instead of punctual brightness, the Panthella creates a calm, cosy ambience - ideal for living spaces, Bedrooms or lounges. Modern versions add contemporary technology to the iconic design: energy-efficient LEDs, dimmable light levels and cordless rechargeable battery models ensure maximum flexibility without changing the original character of the luminaire.

The Panthella Evolution from 1971 to today - these models and variants are available

The Panthella has been carefully developed since its creation in 1971 as a pure cable luminaire in classic white: In addition to the table and floor lamp, new sizes and variants have been added, modern light sources have been introduced and the cordless rechargeable versions, which transfer the character of the lamp to a mobile format, are particularly flexible today.

It has been complemented by changing colour palettes - from subtle natural tones to expressive accent colours such as yellow, coral or orange. The Panthella always remains contemporary without losing its iconic shape. The Panthella family therefore offers the right version for almost every room situation and every style - whether as a discreet light source on the bedside table, as an eye-catcher in the living area or as a light source on the balcony or terrace on warm summer nights.

Style guide - for whom and which rooms is the Panthella suitable?

The Panthella luminaire is particularly popular with lovers of Scandinavian design and anyone who favours minimalist interiors. But even those who love strong colour contrasts and the design vocabulary of the 1960s and 1970s or are looking for a striking individual piece that also radiates calm will find the Panthella luminaire hard to resist. Thanks to its various sizes and Variants, it is suitable both as discreet accent lighting on sideboards and window sills and as a striking floor lamp in the living area.

The strength of the Panthella lies in its unmistakable design combined with exceptional versatility. It changes its character depending on the colour and surface - and adapts to a wide variety of furnishing styles.

Eclectic / Maximalism

In eclectic or maximalist interiors, i.e. interiors that deliberately focus on the crossover of styles and eras, expressiveness and visual abundance, the Panthella takes on the role of a deliberately placed contrast or a connecting element. Its clear, sculptural form brings structure to lively rooms and prevents lavish patterns, expressive works of art or unusual furniture from cluttering the room. In bold colour versions, it blends in confidently, while in neutral versions it provides balance and organises complex living concepts with soft, atmospheric light.

Between an expressive colour concept and a mix of decorative elements, the Panthella floor lamp acts as both a contrast and a haven of peace

Minimalism

In opal white Variants, the Panthella complements minimalist interiors with soft, atmospheric lighting. It fits into classic minimalist interiors with clean lines, neutral Colours and uncluttered surfaces as well as Japandi-inspired interiors where Scandinavian comfort meets Japanese simplicity. Thanks to its discreet but stable presence, Panthella does not dominate the room and creates a calm, balanced atmosphere.

Modern Retro

The Panthella combines the design language of the 1970s with contemporary lighting technology, making it ideal for current interpretations of classic living styles. In bold Colours or with a chrome-plated surface, it becomes a striking object in the room. Between graphic patterns, works of art and colourful furniture, it unfolds its sculptural character and at the same time provides functional, atmospheric light.

Scandi style

Warm wood tones, low sideboards and softly rounded furniture create the ideal setting for the Panthella luminaire. Its organic silhouette blends harmoniously between wooden surfaces, leather, textiles or stone. Placed on a sideboard, a kitchen island or a side table, it has a calm and harmonising effect and supports the typical Nordic atmosphere of light, naturalness and homely restraint.
